What is Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)?
SSDI stands for Social Security Disability Insurance. It is a government benefit administered through the Social Security Administration. SSDI is a monthly benefit that provides relief for disabled individuals and their family. SSDI is a benefit that is paid to people who have worked and paid taxes into the Social Security system as income replacement. To be eligible for benefits, an individual must have worked and paid into the system for a sufficient period of time.
Under Social Security rules, you’re only considered disabled if a medical condition or injury is expected to keep you from working for at least 12 months. The disability can be a physical condition, a mental condition, or a combination of problems. In general, Social Security considers you disabled if:
- You cannot do work that you did before
- They decide that you cannot adjust to other work because of your physical or mental condition(s); and
- Your disability has lasted or is expected to last for at least one year or to result in death.
Children and spouses who have lost a loved one may also be eligible for benefits.
